Seeing and Understanding the Invisible: Codependency “Telescope”

With each major advancement in telescope technology, humankind’s vision and subsequent understanding of our universe has become progressively more focused and defined. What was once a limitless expanse of darkness and sparkly dots, is now giving up its deepest and darkest secrets. As a result, the unknown cannot hide behind our lack of vision.

The explosion of astronomically big discoveries owes a debt to the brave and persevering earlier explorers, such as Galileo Galilei, the Italian astronomer, physicist, and engineer. What would currently be considered a simple device, Galileo’s telescope, afforded humankind its first detailed view into the dark expanse of the evening sky. With a magnification of 20 times, a partnership between Galileo’s imagination, brilliant scientific mind, and his telescope’s optics was forged.

With a clearer vision for what was once creatively speculated, an early illustration of the solar system began to take shape. It took a few pieces of highly polished glass placed in a wooden tube and a person armed with courage, intelligence, and commitment to the truth to uncover the unknown.

Three hundred and eighty-one years later, the Voyager 1 Spacecraft, at 4 billion miles from home, gave humankind a much-needed perspective correction of the earth’s place in the indefinably large universe. By turning its camera back toward earth, Voyager imaged a point of light slightly larger than the diameter of 1/10 of a pixel. Carl Sagan, the beloved astronomer and astrophysicist wrote about the “pale blue dot” in a way that made its inhabitants understand their place in the universe.

“Look again at that (pale blue) dot. That’s here. That’s home. That’s us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives.” “…It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we’ve ever known.” (Carl Sagan, 1994)

While I am neither an astronomer nor this book a telescope, I will give the reader a metaphorical telescope so that the alarmingly misunderstood nature of codependency will come into better focus. With an “optical update,” the indiscriminate dysfunctional and life-shattering nature of codependency will be accurately “imaged” so that this book’s theories, explanations, and definitions will fit with what is seen and demonstrated versus what is misguidedly believed. Please expect to be presented with information that is so clear and irrefutable that you may have no choice other than to accept it.
